Marrakech to Erg Chigaga Desert Tour aims to discover the majesty of the Erg Chegaga Sahara desert with its endless sand dunes and breathtaking scenery. After a 2-hour drive through rocky track sand dunes, we join the most spectacular vast desert of Morocco.
You will be taken on a trek off the beaten tracks through less undiscovered places where you can experience a sense of wilderness, breathe clean air of the Sahara desert and explore the diversity of wonderfully changing landscapes with splendid undulating sand dunes that change color as the day progresses along with the guarantee of a cheerful welcome from the nomadic Berber people.
This vast area of sand dunes makes for a breath-taking landscape, particularly at sunrise or sunset. In the evening we make fire and admire a purely sky full with brightly stars and night out in the open air with moments of real pleasure to discover constellations.
We leave Marrakech, the "Red City," which is the most important former imperial city in Morocco’s history. Situated at the foothills of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, we’ll drive through miles of stunning scenery, passing superb and scattered Berber villages along the way. Almost halfway, we’ll visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a fortified village dating back to the 11th century. Just 35 km from Ait Ben Haddou, we’ll stop at Ouarzazate, known as the "Hollywood of Africa," home to some of the biggest filmmaking studios.
Our 3-days erg chigaga desert continues along the longest valley in the kingdom, stretching 1,052 km, with the largest palm tree oases. We’ll arrive in Agdez, where we will spend the night. The total travel time is approximately 6 hours.
We continue driving along the Draa Valley, passing by Zagora, where the remains of an Almoravid fortress can still be seen. Next, we pass through Tamgrout, a small town situated on the Draa River, where we will visit one of the oldest libraries in the kingdom. As we drive further along the Draa Valley towards M’hamid sahara desert , you’ll notice it’s a modest village, much like the ones we’ve passed before.
From a vast plateau, you’ll be captivated by the sight of the towering Erg Chigaga sand dunes. Here, we embark on a camel ride to witness one of the most fascinating sights—a breathtaking sunset in the middle of these high sand dunes. Tonight, we’ll stay in a Berber camp and enjoy the spectacular starry sky.
Travel time is approximately 5 hours total.
